Precision Tool Buying Checklist: Starrett Caliper Parts, Starrett 226 Micrometer, CMM Price, and Which Fluke Multimeter Do I Need?

I'm not going to pretend I've never made a bad tooling purchase. In my first year on the job in 2017, I ordered a replacement digital caliper without checking the model number.     Here's the thing: I once asked a tool vendor to quote a bench micrometer and a meter on the same purchase order. The vendor said yes, because we had an account. But when the meter had a specification question, the answer was, contact the manufacturer. That wasn't wrong; it just meant I had bought from a reseller, not a specialist. Now I separate the two decisions. For electric meters, I ask the electrical people what they need before I open a catalog.

  2. Match the tool to the tolerance, then to the model

    Most of my early mistakes came from choosing a recognizable brand first and a tolerance later. The brand is not the spec. A good caliper will not measure like a good micrometer, even if both say Starrett. If the tolerance is around 0.001 inch or tighter, I reach for a micrometer. The Starrett 226 micrometer, for instance, is a classic choice because it gives a stable reading on a single range, if you pick the correct range.     When I hear someone ask about CMM price, I know they're trying to compare apples to apples. It's not easy. In 2023, I asked for three quotes on a small coordinate measuring machine. The lowest quote looked great until I added the probe tools, software, training, and vibration isolation pad. The next quote included those items in the base price. The lowest CMM price was not the lowest total project cost.

    If you're doing a CMM evaluation, use a functional specification. Ask each vendor to price the exact package: machine, controller, software, probe system, measuring artifacts, installation, operator training, and initial performance verification. I also ask what happens if the machine is moved later, because that changes the budget.

    I'm not a CMM applications engineer, so I can't tell you which probe or software is right for your parts. What I can tell you as a buyer is this: make the vendor spell out what the price includes before you start negotiating.

  6. Which Fluke multimeter do I need? Start with the job, not the brand

    Now the electrical part of the checklist. I'm not an electrician, and I'm not going to pretend to be one. A basic voltage-check meter and an insulation multimeter are different tools for different jobs. It depends on the work you do, the voltage environment, and whether you need insulation testing.

I'd rather work with a specialist who knows their limits than a generalist who overpromises.
