Why Your Precision Tool Budget Is Wrong: Lessons From $180K in Instrument Purchases

That's the cumulative precision tooling spend I've managed over the last six years at a mid-size contract manufacturer. We bought micrometers, calipers, indicators, an optical comparator, calibration services, repair work–you name it. And every year, the budget overruns were blamed on 'unexpected needs.'
